In season 1 and 2, when Elena was with Stefan, she mainly wore henleys and converses and straight brown hair. She didn’t experiment much. It represents her hesitation to go beyond her comfort zone.

In Season 3, she experiments with dresses, skirts, shorts and boots in the first half of the show (All this while her bonding with Damon is going strong). In the second half she mostly reverts back to her henleys and converses, specially 3x21 and 3x22. Simultaneously she shows regression in her choices as well. She goes back to Stefan, her safety net. She stops making bold choices.

Again, in Season 4, we see her wearing a lot of reds, we see her experimenting a lot with dresses in the beginning of the season, till about 4x08. Her relationship with Damon till now has made her feel free. But from 4x09 to 4x15, she goes back to her jeans and long hoodies. She’s not so free anymore. Not because of her sire bond, but because of her doubts about it, Damon’s insecurities about it. After switching off, we once again see her experimenting, with her choice of boots (lace up) and her hair. She’s free of everything right now, specially her own doubts about her feelings. She might not have felt them but she knew for sure by then that they were real.

Again in 4x23, we see her mostly in a dress, a beautiful white one at that (hello, wedding foreshadow :P). She’s finally completely and truly free - Free from her fears, from Damon’s insecurities, from people’s expectations. She’s finally found the courage to accept Damon for all his darkness and not be apologetic about loving him. She really doesn’t care anymore what people say about their relationship :’)
